Bilingual and Spanish Interdisciplinary Clinical Training (BASIC-T) Program

Overview

The Bilingual and Spanish Interdisciplinary Clinical Training program (BASIC-T) is part of the Public Partnership for Wellbeing (PPFW) between  UCLA and the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (LACDMH). In 2019, the Hispanic Neuropsychiatric Center of Excellence (HNCE) launched BASIC-T to create a Pipeline Program that would help build a new cadre of much needed culturally and linguistically proficient mental health providers capable of better meeting the assessment needs of our diverse Latina/x community throughout Los Angeles County.  At the same time, it launched a Continuing Education Program to help the current LACDMH workforce immediately deploy educational training activities for current staff to expand their skillset in meeting the needs of an increasingly diverse population within LACDMH.  In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, BASIC-T subsequently began a collaboration with the United Mental Health Promoters (UMHP) to develop a mental health curriculum based on the principles of Popular Education as articulated by Paolo Freire.  In parallel, BASIC-T began to work more closely with faith-based and community-based organizations (FBOs & CBOs) to create a model for developing Mental Health Ministries that helps extend the reach and accessibility of LACDMH mental health services to community members that would otherwise remain unserved.
